The schools Choir was formed in 1999 by the late Madam Ong Foon. It aims to bring out the best in the members through a rigorous training to develop the vocal technique as well as the musicality in them. Also, opportunities are given to develop students’ leadership skills in the various roles they can take up as members. As a whole, the Choir provides students with avenues to develop their interpersonal skills when working together; and also areas to build their personal confidence and self-esteem when they perform regularly on the stage.
The Choir actively performs and has taken part in the National Day Parade as part of the Combined Secondary School Choir. It has also performed at charitable concerts at Changi General Hospital and is regularly featured at the Pasir Ris West CC events.

Led by conductor Ms Tham Pei Wen, the Meridian Secondary School Choir has grown to a total strength of 70 singers. Initially, we were a small all-female voices choir, but now it is a SATB Choir (Sops, Altos, Tenors and Basses) since 2019, fulfilling our aim of recruiting not only female voices, but male voices as well.
Ms Tham Pei Wen is a graduate from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Hungary) and holds a Master of Arts in Kodály Music Pedagogy with specialisation in choral conducting. She believes that music belongs to everybody and that it should be learnt in a joyful way. Through the Kodály approach, Pei Wen guides students sequentially to experience music at a deeper level, and aims to develop a good level of musical literacy in every chorister that passes through her hands.
Aside from conducting choirs, Pei Wen is an advocate for special needs music education and community singing. She also a qualified Pilates instructor who has a passion for baking and cats!

Achievements and Highlights
The MSS Choir has established itself as a pivotal Performing Arts group in Meridian Secondary School with its track record of offering its members a comprehensive programme that promotes the holistic development of its members. Besides equipping its members with the technical skills of singing and developing their sense of musicality, the Choir also provides its members with a unique and valuable opportunity to experience the intricacies of working with a group of fellow musicians.
Last year, the choir was awarded a Certificate of Achievement (equivalent to a silver standard) at the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging Choir Competition in 2019. This year we are also honoured to be selected by the Supreme Court to perform at their annual NDP celebrations. We also did a small showcase and choral coaching session for young kids from ‘My First Skool’. The Choir also organises camps for the family to bond through music and games. Members also get to watch concerts and musicals every year. We invite all interested students to join our family of singers!
In perfecting our art form as a family, we are always inspired by the quote:
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato
